Frequently Asked Questions
Below is our FAQ. This area should answer most of your questions about our services.
Why are there so many different kinds of wallpapers?
It's true, there are so many choices it is mind boggling! But that is to your benefit. The colors and patterns are almost endless, so you can find what's just right. Many independent retailers have their wallpaper sample books and in-stock wallpaper organized by room, style, color, and price. Many wallpaper retailers have well trained sales people and even interior designers to help you with your project.
Why do prices very so much on wallpaper?
I've seen it from $10.00 per roll to over $100.00 per roll. You can even find wallpaper for over $200.00 per roll. Most of these wallpapers are called hand-screen prints. However, the average price or a roll of wallpaper is around $15.00. Pricing is affected by such factors as the type of wallpaper, (i.e. fabric-backed vinyl, solid vinyl, paper), and how elaborate and exclusive the design. Designer wallpaper costs more. No matter what pattern, style or colors you are looking for, you can always find wallpaper to fit your budget.
What about wall preparation? What should I do to the walls before hanging wallpaper?
Wall preparation is a very important part of hanging wallpaper. Some wallpapers will show every imperfection on the walls, others are more forgiving. Basic preparation steps include washing any greasy or dirty areas, patching any holes and cracks, and sanding the patched areas. Next, prime the walls with a good quality wall sizing. Your local wallpaper retailer should be able to advise you as to exactly what preparation is needed for your project.
What exactly is a pattern match?
Most wallpaper has a pattern match. A pattern match is the point at which two (2) come together at the seams to complete a pattern. A pattern repeat is the vertical distance between one point on a pattern design to the identical point moving up or down vertically. Large pattern repeats (12" or more) waster more paper, so take this in consideration when ordering your paper. There are basically three types of pattern matches: random, straight-across match and drop match. A random match matches no matter how adjoining strips are positioned. Stripes are a good example of a random match.
Can I hang over existing wallpaper?
Yes. In most cases, if the existing wallpaper is down tight and not peeling. Cut out any loose places and float with joint compound. In addition, float out the seams and the border. Let dry and sand smooth. Paint the room with wallpaper sizing or vinyl over vinyl adhesive and let dry. You are now ready to hang the new wallpaper.
Can I hang my new wallpaper or do I need a professional?
You can hang your own wallpaper as long as you educate yourself first. Books and video tapes are available. If you are a beginner, stay with simpler rooms, such as bedrooms, dens, hallways, etc. Kitchens and baths are more difficult.
If you have tall ceilings or an expensive wallpaper, I urge you to consider a our services.
How do I figure how much wallpaper I will need?
The first thing you need is an accurate measurement of the room. Use a steel tape measure or a yard stick. Measure in feet, rounding off to the next highest foot. Draw a room diagram showing ceiling height, doors and windows. Show fireplaces and bookcases, etc. as well. Deduct for these areas only if you are hanging a random or no match pattern. If you have a pattern match, only deduct for large areas such as fireplaces, sliding doors or floor to ceiling bookshelves. Count doors and small windows as wall space because the pattern has to continue over the door. Multiply the length of the room by the height of the ceilings to determine the square footage. Divide the square footage by 25 (the number of square feet in a roll.) This will give you the number or rolls you need to complete your project.
Can you give me more details on how much I will need?
OK, here are the details...
A single roll of wallpaper contains 28 square feet of Paper. Most wallpaper is sold in double or triple rolls with varying widths. Measure the length of all walls to be papered and multiply this number by room height.
For example, your room is 12'X14'. You have two walls at 12'X24' and two walls at 14'X28'. Add 28+24 = 54'. Now multiply 54'X8' (ceiling height) = 432 square feet. A single roll of wallpaper has 28 square feet. Remember that some wallpaper will be wasted with extra cuts and pattern matching. Let's allow for 25 square feet out of the total 28 square feet. Divide your final room square footage by 25 to determine how many rolls you will need.
432 square feet 425 = 17.28 rolls. Round this off the 18 single rolls.
Remember, It is a good idea to order more paper than you need to allow for pattern matches and mistakes.
General Rules to Follow
* Remember to check the dye lot or run numbers, each roll should be the same.
* Remember to go a little extra on wall preparation, it will make a world of difference.
* When hanging a strip of wallpaper, do not slap it on the wall and try to push on it to move it. Instead, try to set the seam first, then hang the rest of the strip.
* DO NOT fight the paper, it will tear and win!
* Do not try to work out all the bubbles if they do not smooth out easily. As wallpaper dries, it contracts and pulls out small bubbles.
